About the District

The 15th State Senate District in eastern Kansas stretches from Caney and the Oklahoma border on the south to Williamsburg and Interstate 35 on the north.  It extends from Cedar Vale on the west to Savonburg on the east.  It covers all of five counties and parts of four others.  It is home to 66,629 people, according to the 2002 U.S. Census.

The district is home to Allen County Community College and Independence Community College.  Some of its major employers include the Wolf Creek nuclear power plant in Coffey County, two of the state's three cement mills (LaFarge in Fredonia and Monarch in Humboldt), Cessna Aircraft's single-engine and small-jet manufacturing plant in Independence, the Russell Stover candy plant in Iola, and the Cobalt Boats plant in Neodesha.  There are numerous other industries in the district.

Production agriculture remains a vital part of the economy for this largely rural district.  Tourism also is a growing element of the economy, and the district is home to numerous tourist attractions including the Little House on the Prairie in Montgomery County and the Buster Keaton festival in Allen County and associated museum  in Woodson County.  The district also has outstanding outdoor recreation opportunities; for example, it is home to Elk City Reservoir and State Park in Montgomery County, Toronto Lake and Cross Timbers State Park in Woodson County, and Flint Oak Lodge in Elk County.
