National Women's History Month

March is National Women's History Month!

The 2007 theme, "Generations of Women Moving History Forward” 2007 presents special opportunities to highlight some critically important historic events, including the 50th anniversary of the integration of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, and the 30th anniversary of the National Women’s Conference in Houston, Texas.

  • Women's History Month -- See more than 30 federal resources for teaching and learning about women pioneers and writers, the fight for women's rights, and events and individuals that shaped the course of women's history in the U.S.

The National Women's History Project (NWHP)
The National Women's History Project, founded in 1980, is an educational nonprofit organization. Our mission is to recognize and celebrate the diverse and historic accomplishments of women by providing information and educational materials and programs.

Women Who Changed History (Scholastic)

Changing the Face of Medicine
"This site celebrates our finest female physicians and their impact on medicine over the last 200 years. Explore their achievements in the areas of birth control, breast cancer, and even the role of spirituality in medicine. In the 19th century, women had to fight hard to vanquish gender and racial barriers and attend medical school. Balancing career and family while faced with a glass ceiling was no easy feat. Yet perseverance led Marie E. Zakrzewska to found
the first women-run hospital in Boston, and Helen Cordelia Putnam to champion neonatal care for low-income families. Their fresh perspectives led to widespread public health reform and groundbreaking work in internal medicine. Today, women occupy the highest ranks of medical administration and research, with Eleanor Gossard Shore at the forefront of gender equality in career development. As women take the lead, let's reflect on how they got there."

Women of Our Time
The National Portrait Gallery presents the lively faces of the 20th century's most famous and influential women in this crisp, stylish tribute to girl power. Each photograph is a biographical vignette of a woman who helped her gender gain the right to vote, hold public office, and climb the corporate ladder by the end of the century. The precociously poised Shirley Temple and a brooding image of child-star Judy Garland convey a sense of their off-screen personas.
The steel of publishing magnate Katharine Graham, the passion of chef Julia Child, the clean-scrubbed ambition of Amelia Earhart, and the in-your-face attitude of anarchist Emma Goldman are clearly rendered. With the magical use of camera lens, film, paper, and photographic talent, this collection offers a striking sense of the personalities and individuals behind the larger-than-life
names.
