Photographs, as well as art works of all types are subject to the elements and will fade over time. We can help fend off their deterioration by following a few simple steps to insure that our valuable pieces stay safe for many years.
Heat, humidity and light are the main causes of photographs and artwork deteriorating.
Art should be displayed in a properly heated area, with proper humidity levels so that it doesn't absorb moisture or become subject to extreme heat and cold variations. This holds true for the display of photographs also.
Light contains damaging ultra violet (UV) rays that can cause any piece of art to fade rapidly. Artwork and photographs should never be displayed in direct sunlight.
Photographs and all types of artwork, other than works on canvas, should be matted, and framed behind UV protected glass.
1. Glass should be UV protected not just a plain piece of window glass, which cannot block out UV rays.
2. Matting should be high quality board. It is the cardboard border that surrounds the photo or art work in its frame and prevents it from coming into contact with the glass. Matt Board must be acid free and have an alkaline buffer to neutralize future shifts in acidity within the frame. The backing board must also be acid free and buffered--it is the support that the photo or artwork will be mounted against
3. The frame should be selected to compliment the work being framed. It should not be as wide as the matting or gaudy enough to cause distraction from the artwork.
Letting a custom framer do the work can have best results.
When framed properly, your photo or artwork will be a joy to view and it will maintain its natural appearance for many years to come.----Enjoy!!
